MINNEAPOLIS — Tragedy struck the city of Minneapolis on Thursday as a police officer lost his life in what authorities are calling an ambush. The officer, identified as Jamal Mitchell, was responding to a shooting call and providing medical attention to a man who shot him. The incident also resulted in the deaths of the suspected gunman and another individual, while leaving a third person critically injured in a south Minneapolis neighborhood.

Assistant Police Chief Katie Blackwell revealed that a second officer and a firefighter were also injured in the shooting. Mitchell, a father who was engaged to be married, was pronounced dead at Hennepin County Medical Center. His colleagues gathered outside the medical facility to pay their respects to the fallen hero.

Mayor Jacob Frey expressed his condolences, stating, “The city of Minneapolis lost a hero in police officer Jamal Mitchell. This officer gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect and save the lives of others. His life, his service, and his name will forever be remembered in the city of Minneapolis.”

Authorities highlighted Mitchell’s heroism, citing an incident from last year where he and another officer rescued an elderly couple from a house fire on his third day on the job. Chief Brian O’Hara commended their quick actions, which prevented a more tragic outcome as they saved the couple before the home was fully engulfed in flames.

The shooting incident comes just three months after a heartbreaking event in the Minneapolis suburb of Burnsville, where two officers and a firefighter-paramedic lost their lives while responding to a domestic violence call. In that case, a man opened fire from a home with seven children inside, resulting in casualties and injuries before the gunman took his own life.
