A 73-year-old woman was reportedly attacked on Thursday near the 1600 block of Ocean Front Walk by a male suspect, according to the local police. The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Jalan Rodger James, who is currently experiencing homelessness, was apprehended shortly after the incident for allegedly committing battery on an elderly person and resisting arrest.
According to the victim, during her morning stroll, James approached her while shouting incomprehensibly. Despite her efforts to step aside, he deliberately pushed her to the ground. As a result, she suffered a back injury and received abrasions on her hands from attempting to cushion her fall.
Following the initial assault, emergency services received a second call reporting James attempting to strike passersby. Within a matter of minutes, the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) Drone Operator successfully located James near 2nd and Colorado. Law enforcement officers promptly arrived at the scene and took him into custody.
After collecting video evidence and witness testimonies, detectives presented the case to the Crown Prosecution Service for further review and potential prosecution.
James now faces charges of felony battery causing serious bodily harm, felony elder/adult abuse, and two counts of resisting an executive officer.
In addition to the current allegations, James may also face potential charges in connection with another assault case in Santa Monica, which is currently awaiting review by the Crown Prosecution Service.
“The safety and welfare of our most vulnerable residents is of utmost importance to the SMPD. Assaults on elderly individuals are treated with the utmost seriousness, and we are committed to pursuing felony charges in such instances,” stated Chief Ramon Batista.
