Authorities in Ferguson, Missouri, have released a detailed timeline of a fatal shooting incident involving a Ferguson police officer. The incident took place last month and resulted in the tragic death of 18-year-old Joshua Campbell.

According to St. Louis County police, the incident began at a QuikTrip convenience store located on West Florissant Avenue. Campbell, who was riding in a white Ford Escape, fatally shot the driver of the vehicle, identified as Detarius Haynes, before being shot by the Ferguson police officer.

Timeline of the Incident

Lt. Col. Tim Cunningham narrated a video timeline of the incident, starting with the arrival of the two men at the convenience store. Haynes entered the store to make a purchase while Campbell remained in the vehicle.

Shortly after, the police officer parked his patrol SUV in front of the store. Surveillance footage captured both men making purchases inside the store before returning to their vehicles.

As Haynes drove towards the gas pumps, the officer heard gunfire and rushed towards the scene. He witnessed Haynes falling from the driver’s seat and Campbell exiting the vehicle with a weapon.

Police Response

The officer, with his service weapon drawn, gave verbal commands to Campbell, which were ignored. He then fired his gun, striking Campbell as he attempted to flee the scene. Campbell collapsed on West Florissant Avenue, and the officer immediately radioed for assistance.

Upon investigation, a 9mm pistol belonging to Campbell and 10 shell casings were recovered at the scene. The Ferguson officer, aged 37 with eight years of law enforcement experience, fired a total of eight shots during the incident.

Ferguson Police Chief Troy Doyle expressed condolences to the families affected by the incident, highlighting the challenging decisions officers face in such situations. The Ferguson Police Department activated its Civilian Review Board within 48 hours to oversee internal investigations of critical incidents.
