SALISBURY — A gentleman was apprehended following allegations that he was driving at speeds exceeding 150 mph in an endeavour to evade a traffic stop on Interstate 85.

The occurrence commenced at approximately 10:18 p.m. on Monday when a deputy observed a dark-coloured Ford Mustang travelling at over 100 mph near the Julian Road exit, as described by Captain Mark McDaniel, the public information officer for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. The deputy subsequently caught up with the Mustang, activated his lights and sirens in an attempt to halt the vehicle. The driver, however, did not comply and instead accelerated to over 150 mph in a bid to flee from the deputy, according to McDaniel.

The deputy pursued the Mustang south along the interstate until it departed onto Webb Road, where it entered a parking lot in the 300 block of Webb Road, McDaniel added.

The driver of the Mustang, identified as 21-year-old John Cameron Curry, was taken into custody and charged with felony fleeing to elude and misdemeanor aggressive driving. Records from the sheriff’s office indicate that Curry was arrested at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday.

Curry was remanded in the Rowan County Detention Center and granted a bail amount of £20,000.
