Teen tied to downtown 7-Eleven shooting now accused in unprovoked assault of elderly man downtown.

Accident – Death – Obituary News :

On May 30th, an 18-year-old suspect, identified as Richard S. Smith, was apprehended by the Spokane police for allegedly attacking an 83-year-old man in downtown Spokane. This incident comes after Smith was previously arrested for a shooting outside a 7-Eleven gas station earlier this year.

The assault on the elderly man took place on May 18th near Third Avenue and Monroe Street. The victim, who was putting letters in a mailbox, was approached by Smith, who then proceeded to punch him in the face without any provocation. This violent act resulted in significant injuries to the victim’s arm and face, leaving him in a vulnerable state.

Following the assault, Smith fled the scene before law enforcement could arrive. However, the Violent Crimes Task Force officers managed to track him down in the downtown area and took him into custody on Thursday.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time Smith has been in trouble with the law. In February, he was arrested for shooting and injuring a man outside a 7-Eleven on Division Street and Second Avenue. He is currently facing trial for first-degree assault in connection to that incident, with the trial scheduled for July.

Smith was booked into the Spokane County Jail on suspicion of second-degree assault and will remain in custody until his trial. The Spokane police are continuing their investigation into both cases to ensure justice is served.
