Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is focusing on a cut to an inactive but pressurized gas line as the central point of their investigation into a devastating explosion that shook downtown Youngstown, Ohio. The blast, which occurred near Central Square on Tuesday afternoon, impacted a building housing a Chase bank and several apartments. Tragically, one person lost their life and seven others sustained injuries in the explosion, according to officials.

NTSB Investigation Team Arrives in Youngstown

Following the incident, the NTSB swiftly dispatched a team of experts in pipelines and hazardous materials to Youngstown to conduct a thorough investigation into the natural gas explosion.

Preliminary Findings and Focus on Pressurized Gas Line

Initial investigations suggest that work crews were in the basement of the building to clear out old utility infrastructure before the explosion occurred. NTSB board member Tom Chapman highlighted that a potential third-party cut to the pressurized service line is a key aspect of their inquiry to determine the cause of the gas release and ensuing explosion. Chapman shared during a press briefing on Thursday that a cut was discovered in the pressurized but inactive underground service line by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio and Enbridge Gas, the service provider for the area.

Probe into Abandoned Service Line

Part of the investigation will delve into why the seemingly abandoned service line was still pressurized, according to Chapman. He emphasized that there is currently no evidence to suggest any malicious intent in the incident and that the focus will be on reviewing the proper procedures followed in such scenarios.

NTSB Investigation Timeline

The NTSB’s investigation is estimated to last about a week, with an initial report expected in approximately 30 days. Final reports typically take between 12 to 24 months to conclude.

Impact and Recovery Efforts

Chapman described the damage caused by the explosion as “stunning,” noting the devastating impact on the building. The floor collapsed into the flooded basement, and the body of a bank employee, identified as Akil Drake, was recovered from the site. As a result of the structural damage, the affected building and a nearby hotel have been closed, and surrounding streets have been cordoned off indefinitely to prevent any potential structural collapse.
