EUGENE, Oregon (KEZI) — A 34-year-old man, identified as Zachariah Christopher Matte, was taken into custody on Wednesday afternoon following a tense standoff with law enforcement at a residence on Jackson Street in Eugene.

The Eugene Police Department responded to a disturbance call at the location just before 4:30 p.m. on May 29. Upon arrival, officers determined that Matte needed to be apprehended. He then barricaded himself in the attic of the house, allegedly making threats of “suicide by cop.”

Multiple law enforcement agencies were called to the scene, including the Crisis Negotiation Team, SWAT, drone team, K9 units from both EPD and the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, and Eugene Springfield Fire Department. After nearly four hours of negotiation, Matte surrendered peacefully and was arrested without incident, according to Eugene police officials.

Following his arrest, Matte was transported to the Lane County Jail where he is facing charges of menacing as an abuse prevention act offense and interfering with making a report. He remains in custody as of May 30, 2024.

The Eugene Police Department ensured that accommodations were arranged for a victim and two dogs involved in the incident through the EPD Foundation.
