The incident occurred as an officer was driving west in the 1000 block of Carlsbad Village Drive, underneath Interstate 5, in a marked patrol car. A rock suddenly struck and damaged the patrol car’s windshield, shattering the spotlight as well. The officer, upon noticing the damage, pulled into a nearby parking lot to inspect it. He promptly contacted his supervisor, who arrived at the scene to assist in assessing the extent of the damage.
However, the situation took a violent turn when a suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Kyle McCord from San Diego, unexpectedly approached the officer from behind. Without warning or provocation, the suspect struck the officer in the head with a skateboard before fleeing the scene. In response to the attack, the officer drew his service weapon and sought cover at a nearby business, firing three shots at McCord. The supervisor joined the pursuit, chasing the suspect on foot for three blocks along Carlsbad Village Drive until additional officers arrived to apprehend McCord without further incident.
