MENDON TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – Tragedy struck Mendon Township on Thursday morning as a local woman lost her life in a devastating head-on collision in St. Joseph County.
The fatal accident occurred shortly after 8:00 a.m. on Silver Street, just north of Pinhook Road, according to St. Joseph County Undersheriff Jason Bingaman.
Initial reports suggest that a 24-year-old male driver from Reading was travelling north on Silver Street when his vehicle collided head-on with another car.
The victim, identified as 45-year-old Melissa Hallack from Mendon, was driving the other vehicle and sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle that caused the collision was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo for treatment. Authorities have chosen not to release his name at this time, pending further investigation.
The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office has indicated that alcohol is believed to have played a role in the tragic crash.
