A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday in southern Texas, as a family of five lost their lives in a devastating collision. The fatal crash occurred when a FedEx box truck crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the family’s vehicle, according to authorities.
The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that the box truck was travelling eastbound on U.S. 57 at around 8 p.m. CDT, approximately nine miles from Eagle Pass. The collision took place on a highway near Eagle Pass, a town in Maverick County, Texas.
Reports from local news outlets, including KABB-TV and WOAI-TV, indicated that the incident involved a grey 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV that was travelling westbound on the same highway. Tragically, the box truck failed to maintain its lane and collided head-on with the SUV.
The victims, all residents of Eagle Pass, were identified as Jose Martinez (71), Noemi Jimenez Martinez (61), Joanna Martinez (34), Samantha Martinez (25), and a 10-year-old girl whose identity has not been disclosed. The young girl succumbed to her injuries while being transported to a nearby hospital.
The driver of the truck sustained injuries and was taken to Fort Duncan Medical Center for treatment. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is currently underway.
