Scottie Scheffler Cleared of Charges After Incident at PGA Championship

Star golfer Scottie Scheffler has been exonerated of all charges following an incident that occurred while he was in Louisville, Kentucky, for the PGA Championship earlier this month.

The decision to dismiss the charges was announced by Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell, who stated that after a thorough review of the case, his office could not proceed with the prosecution.

According to O’Connell, the evidence supported Scheffler’s claim that the incident was a “big misunderstanding,” and his actions did not meet the criteria for any criminal offences.

During a court appearance, Judge Anne Delahanty approved the motion to dismiss the charges. Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, did not address the court.

In a statement to the media, Romines expressed satisfaction with the dismissal of the case and emphasized that the charges were dropped with prejudice, preventing any future prosecution.

The incident in question took place near the Valhalla Golf Club on May 17, just hours before Scheffler’s scheduled tee time at the PGA Championship. Police alleged that he disregarded a traffic command from an officer and caused injury to the officer with his vehicle.

The arrest occurred shortly after a fatal accident near the golf course, where a volunteer named John Mills was fatally struck by a shuttle bus. O’Connell and Romines clarified that Scheffler was unaware of the tragic incident at the time of the altercation with the officer.

Romines extended condolences to the Mills family and acknowledged the heartbreaking nature of the situation.

In response to the dismissal, Scheffler expressed gratitude for the support he received and urged everyone to remember the true tragedy of May 17, emphasizing his thoughts and prayers for the Mills family.

Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked golfer, had been facing charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, as well as third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer.

A police report alleged that Scheffler refused to comply with the officer’s instructions, resulting in an altercation that led to the officer being injured.

Following the incident, Scheffler described it as a misunderstanding and stressed that he never intended to disobey the officer’s commands.

While there were considerations of pursuing civil action over the incident, Romines indicated that Scheffler opted against it to avoid additional costs and distractions.

The Louisville Metro Police Department respected the decision to drop the charges and reaffirmed its commitment to serving the city and addressing violent crime.

Notably, there was no body camera footage of the incident between Scheffler and the officer, which had raised concerns about transparency and accountability in law enforcement.

Following an internal investigation, the officer involved received corrective action for failing to activate his body-worn camera, a violation of department policy.
