Accident – Death – Obituary News :

An investigation is currently underway by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office following a tragic two-vehicle collision that occurred approximately 16 miles south of Mulberry on the morning of Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

The incident, which resulted in the loss of both drivers involved, took place when a white 2021 Isuzu box truck collided with a white 1999 Peterbilt semi-truck with a dump trailer.

Emergency responders from the PCSO and Polk County Fire Rescue were swiftly dispatched to the scene at State Road 37 and Ft. Green Mine Road at around 8:00 AM.

A fire broke out following the collision, involving both vehicles and spreading to nearby grass and brush, although it was promptly extinguished by the responding units.

Preliminary findings of the investigation

Based on initial investigations conducted by the PCSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit, it was determined that the box truck was travelling south on SR 37 behind several other vehicles, while the semi-truck was heading north.

As the vehicles approached the intersection, a southbound vehicle began to make a left turn onto Ft. Green Mine Road.

The driver of the box truck is believed to have failed to notice the vehicles in front slowing down. Upon realising the situation, she attempted to swerve to the left into the northbound lane to avoid a collision with the vehicle ahead, inadvertently crossing into the path of the oncoming semi.

The impact of the collision caused the semi-truck to overturn, resulting in a devastating outcome for both drivers.

Identification of the victims

Although the victims have been tentatively identified by detectives, their identities are yet to be officially confirmed. The driver of the box truck is reported to be an adult female, while the driver of the semi-truck is identified as an adult male.

The closure of SR 37 lasted until approximately 3:45 PM on Wednesday afternoon, as authorities worked diligently to clear the scene and gather evidence for their ongoing investigation.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office continues its efforts to gather further information and evidence to determine the exact circumstances that led to this tragic collision.
