GLASTONBURY, CT — Glastonbury police have identified the driver who tragically lost her life in a collision between a car and dump truck last Friday as 56-year-old Christine Sawamura from Manchester. Sawamura, who was an accomplished tennis player and animal lover, is being fondly remembered by her community.

The fatal incident occurred at 10:36 a.m. on Keeney Street, between Old Reservoir Road and Woodfield Crossing. According to the police report, a sedan traveling north on Keeney St. suddenly veered across the center line and collided head-on with a dump truck/trailer combination.

Tragically, Sawamura, the driver of the sedan, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the truck escaped unharmed.

In an obituary shared by Leete-Stevens Family Funeral Homes, Sawamura was described as a passionate animal lover who dedicated her time to volunteering at a local rescue service. She often went above and beyond by personally driving dogs to their new homes in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Additionally, Sawamura was a resilient cancer survivor.

Her love for tennis was evident during her time at Hartwick College, where she honed her skills on the court. Sawamura even had the opportunity to participate in an exhibition doubles match alongside tennis legends John McEnroe and Andre Agassi at the Pepsi Center in Albany.

Services to commemorate Sawamura’s life are scheduled for Saturday. Further details can be found in her obituary on the Leete-Stevens Family Funeral Homes website.
