YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The body discovered following a significant explosion in eastern Ohio has been confirmed to be that of a 27-year-old bank employee.

The incident, which occurred at around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, took place at the Realty Building on Central Square in downtown Youngstown. The explosion caused widespread damage and prompted an immediate emergency response.

After an extensive search operation, the body of a man was recovered later that same evening. The individual has now been identified as Akil Drake, a young employee at the Chase Bank branch located within the building.

Reports from CBS affiliate WKBN indicate that Drake was among the casualties of the explosion, which also resulted in injuries to several others. Of the seven individuals rushed to nearby hospitals, only one remains in critical condition after being rescued from the building’s basement.

In a surprising turn of events, a woman who was initially believed to be missing was later located at an emergency room under a different name, providing some relief amidst the chaos.

Youngstown Mayor Jamael Tito Brown has confirmed that the State Fire Marshal’s Office has taken charge of the investigation into the explosion. While the exact cause remains unknown at this time, Mayor Brown emphasised the need for a thorough examination to determine what led to the tragic incident.

Following the explosion, the Red Cross set up a support centre at the Covelli Centre to assist the displaced residents of the damaged building. Meanwhile, the Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board has extended emergency counselling services through Compass Family and Community Services for those grappling with the emotional aftermath of the event.
