Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Authorities have confirmed that human remains discovered at the base of Mount Elden in northern Arizona belong to a man from the Valley who went missing over seven years ago.

The skeletal remains were stumbled upon by a hiker on Nov. 2, 2019, in a wooded area at the foot of the mountain. Initially, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office investigators struggled to identify the remains.

After conducting a thorough investigation, a DNA profile was developed last year and compared to existing profiles in genealogy databases. The missing man, Mark Dunne, was reported missing by his family to Phoenix Police in March 2017, making him a potential match.

“A DNA sample taken from the remains was then compared to that of Dunne’s family members,” stated the sheriff’s office. “This testing, conducted by the University of North Texas, in conjunction with further investigation by detectives, confirmed the identity of the remains as belonging to Dunne.”

Investigators have indicated that evidence at the site where the remains were found suggests Dunne may have been camping in the vicinity for an extended period of time.

The cause of Dunne’s death remains unknown, leaving authorities with unanswered questions surrounding the circumstances leading to his demise.
