Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The unit of the Attorney General’s Office that is currently investigating the fatal police shooting that took place on Friday has identified the individual who was shot and killed by officers as a 39-year-old man named Anthony Ferguson, a resident of Baltimore. Ferguson was taken to a hospital where he tragically passed away. At this time, Ferguson’s family has not been reachable for immediate comment.

The officers involved in the shooting have been named, although the specific officer who was shot in his bulletproof vest and subsequently hospitalized has not been disclosed. The officers involved are Sgt. Timothy Copeland, who has served with the Baltimore Police Department for 18 years; Detective Nicholas Willems, with 10 years of service; Officer Brandall Mable, with six years of service; Officer Nicolas Sturla, with four years of service; and Officer Kevin Retamales, with three years of service. All of these Baltimore Police officers are part of the Southern District, as confirmed by the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division.

The Independent Investigations Division, in collaboration with a Baltimore Police-led probe, stated that the shooting incident began around 10:30 p.m. on Friday night when a man pointed a handgun at officers and failed to comply with orders to drop the weapon.

According to a news release from the agency, both the man and multiple officers discharged their weapons, resulting in the man and one officer being struck by bullets. The injured officer was hit in his vest and was subsequently hospitalised.

Body camera footage of the incident is available and is expected to be made public in the coming days or weeks. It has not been disclosed whether the officers or the man initiated the gunfire.

The incident originated when officers approached Ferguson, who was seated on the porch of a commercial building near South Hanover Street and Baltic Avenue in South Baltimore’s Fairfield Area, just north of Brooklyn. The Independent Investigations Division revealed that officers suspected Ferguson to be a “person of interest” in a shooting that occurred on May 22 with no reported victims. As they questioned him, Ferguson stood up, drew a handgun from his waistband, and pointed it at the officers, as per a “preliminary review” of the body camera footage. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Baltimore Police announced on Sunday that the officer who was shot in his vest had been discharged from the hospital. Police Commissioner Richard Worley credited the officer’s vest for saving his life.

“Nobody is seeking to harm or kill anyone, but we cannot tolerate individuals brandishing firearms, pointing them, or firing them at anyone, particularly law enforcement officers,” Mayor Brandon Scott stated at a news conference held on Friday night following the shooting.
