COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A devastating incident unfolded on Tuesday night on the far west side of Columbus, resulting in the death of a man who was attempting to cross a major road.
The Columbus Police Accident Investigation Unit reported that an adult pedestrian was trying to cross West Broad Street in the Galloway Ridge neighbourhood of west Columbus. The tragic event occurred at 9:15 p.m. when the man crossed east of the Rockbrook Crossing Avenue intersection. Unfortunately, he was outside of a marked crosswalk, heading in a north to south direction.
As the man was crossing the busy street, a Dodge Charger travelling east collided with him in the second eastbound lane. The impact of the collision caused the man to be knocked off the south side of the road.
Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene, and a Columbus Fire Medic team quickly attended to the victim. The pedestrian, later identified as 42-year-old Michael Waskel, was rushed to Doctor’s West Hospital in critical condition. Tragically, despite the efforts of medical staff, Waskel was pronounced dead at 9:43 p.m. upon arrival at the hospital.
The driver of the Dodge Charger remained at the scene following the incident. The Columbus Police Accident Investigation Unit is conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the circumstances that led to this fatal collision.
