Vishal Agarwal, a prominent real estate developer, has found himself embroiled in controversy following allegations of bribery in the Pune Porsche crash case involving his 17-year-old son. The incident, which occurred on May 19 in Kalyani Nagar, resulted in the tragic deaths of two young software professionals.
Agarwal allegedly made a staggering 14 calls to Dr Ajay Taware, the head of the Forensic Medicine department at Sassoon General Hospital, within a span of less than three hours. These calls, which took place between 8 am and 11 am, are believed to have been related to manipulating his son’s forensic report.
Allegations of bribery and manipulation
Reports suggest that Agarwal paid a bribe of Rs 3 lakh to doctors at Sassoon Hospital in an attempt to tamper with his son’s forensic report. The phone conversations between Agarwal and Dr Taware reportedly took place over WhatsApp, Facetime, and regular calls, coinciding with the collection and processing of the blood samples.
It is alleged that, at Taware’s behest, Dr Shrihari Halnore, the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer, switched the blood samples of the accused, replacing them with those of another individual. Subsequently, the manipulated report indicated that the teenager had not consumed alcohol at the time of the accident.
Arrests and ongoing investigation
Following these revelations, Dr Taware and Dr Halnore were arrested by the Pune Police. Additionally, a hospital staffer named Atul Ghatkamble was apprehended for his alleged involvement as a middleman in the bribery scheme.
The police recovered Rs 2.5 lakh from Dr Halnore and Rs 50,000 from Ghatkamble, believed to be part of the bribe money. Further investigations are underway to determine the full extent of the bribery and manipulation in the case.
Probe into misconduct and warnings of disclosure
A committee formed by the Maharashtra government’s Directorate of Medical Education and Research is investigating allegations of misconduct by the two doctors. Staff members at the hospital have reportedly claimed that Taware used to request alcohol to be brought to the hospital.
Dr Taware has ominously warned that he will reveal more names of individuals involved in the Pune Porsche crash case, indicating potential further revelations in the ongoing investigation.
Searches at Taware’s residence and impending report
As part of the probe, the Pune Police conducted extensive searches at Dr Taware’s residence, recovering documents related to previous cases that are now under scrutiny. The committee investigating the misconduct is expected to submit its report to the state government following an 8-hour inquiry.
