Guwahati, 29th May: Assam has been hit hard by heavy rains caused by Cyclone Remal, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of three individuals, including a school student, in the last 24 hours. As the downpours continue, officials have issued a Red alert for 10 districts in the state, with more rain expected in the coming days.

Tragic Incidents

According to a statement from the State Disaster Management Authority, one person each lost their lives in Morigaon, Kamrup (Metro), and Kamrup (Rural) districts. The student who tragically passed away in Morigaon has been identified as Kaushik Amphi from the Dhupguri area. He was on his way to school in an autorickshaw when a large tree fell on the vehicle, causing fatal injuries. In another incident, a school bus in the Dhekiajuli locality was hit by an uprooted tree, resulting in multiple injuries among the students on board.

Impact on Infrastructure

The heavy rains and strong winds have caused widespread disruption, with power supply being severely affected due to uprooted electric poles. The Power Department is working tirelessly to restore electricity in the affected areas. Road communications have been disrupted in the Barak Valley region and Dima Hasao district, while districts like Cachar and Karimganj are facing flooding due to the incessant rain.

Urban floods have affected a total population of 21,714 in 11 wards of Silchar town in Cachar. The Karimganj district administration has set up a relief camp in the Patharkandi area, providing essential supplies to those affected by the floods.

Preventive Measures

With the Weather Department forecasting more heavy rains, a Red alert has been issued for Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dima Hasao, West Karbi Anglong, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, Hojai, and Golaghat districts. Educational institutions in these areas will remain closed until further notice.

The district administrations have been advised to regulate fishing activities, discourage agricultural work, evacuate vulnerable populations, provide prompt assistance to the injured, maintain open communication channels, restore electricity promptly, and assess damages in a timely manner.

Government Response

Chief Secretary Ravi Kota chaired a high-level meeting in Guwahati to assess the situation and instructed various government departments to prepare an action plan for the immediate restoration and repair of infrastructure affected by the cyclonic storm and heavy rainfall.

Ferry services in several districts have been suspended to ensure the safety of the public. The authorities are working round the clock to mitigate the impact of the adverse weather conditions and provide relief to those in need.
