JOHNSON COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities have made an arrest in connection with a fatal weekend crash that occurred in Johnson County.

The tragic incident took place just before 8 a.m. on Sunday, when 38-year-old Jason E. Brumley from Emporia was driving a vehicle that collided with another vehicle driven by 76-year-old Sherry L. Pena near the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 and Sunflower Road. The Johnson County Sheriff’s office was called to the scene to investigate the crash.

Tragically, Sherry L. Pena was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to the scene and transported two other passengers in the vehicle, identified as 45-year-old Natalia L. Pena and a 6-year-old boy, to a local hospital in critical condition. Fortunately, they are expected to survive.

Following the crash, deputies conducted a DUI test on Jason E. Brumley. Subsequently, Brumley was taken into custody and transported to the Johnson County Detention Center. He faces a requested charge of involuntary manslaughter, as indicated in online jail records. Brumley is currently being held on a bond set at £350,000 and appeared in court for the first time on Tuesday, according to online jail records.
