A tragic incident unfolded in Lakewood as a 67-year-old motorcyclist from Holiday Hills lost his life in a collision with a minivan on Route 176 near Dean Street. The McHenry County Coroner’s office confirmed that Claude Bulava succumbed to blunt force injuries sustained in the crash, as revealed by an autopsy conducted on Tuesday.
Authorities are awaiting toxicology results to further understand the circumstances of the accident.
Lakewood Police responded to the scene following a distress call reporting a collision between a motorcycle and a minivan at 2:22 p.m. on Saturday.
Upon arrival, emergency services found Bulava and an unnamed female passenger unconscious on the road. Immediate medical attention was provided by the Woodstock Fire/Rescue Department and the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department.
Despite efforts to revive him, Bulava was rushed to Northwestern Medicine Woodstock Hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
The female passenger of the motorcycle was airlifted to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in critical condition. Her current state remains undisclosed.
The driver of the minivan was taken to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and their condition is also unknown at this time.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois Department of Transportation closed the road in both directions until 6:20 p.m. to facilitate the investigation.
The Coroner’s Office continues to collaborate with the Lakewood Police Department, Woodstock Fire Department, and Northwestern Woodstock to gather more information about the tragic incident.
