COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV/Gray News) – A devastating wrong-way crash on Interstate 25 in Colorado Springs over the Memorial Day weekend has left three people dead, including a heroic good Samaritan who lost his life while trying to assist crash victims.

The tragic incident unfolded early Sunday morning when authorities received reports of a vehicle travelling in the wrong direction on the interstate. Despite their swift response, the wrong-way driver collided head-on with another car, resulting in the deaths of two individuals.

Amidst the chaos, 64-year-old Jose Montalvo, a compassionate bystander, selflessly stepped in to offer aid to the crash victims. Tragically, Montalvo was struck and killed by a passing vehicle while attempting to cross the interstate to reach those in need.

According to a spokesperson for the Colorado Springs Police Department, “A citizen stopped and exited their vehicle to render aid. While attempting to cross the interstate, they were struck by another vehicle northbound.”

Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing scene, describing several vehicles with hazard lights on as Montalvo bravely ran across the interstate. Unfortunately, an oncoming vehicle failed to notice the initial crash and slowing traffic, resulting in a tragic collision with the good Samaritan.
