Patna: Bihar Police have made a significant breakthrough in the case of the brutal murder of a final year undergraduate student at BN College on the law college campus of Patna University. The main suspect, identified as Chandan Kumar, a final-year student of the college and a resident of Bihta in the city, has been taken into custody. The victim, Harsh Raj (22), was fatally assaulted by unknown individuals on the university premises on Monday.

Authorities have revealed that Kumar, a resident of Jackson hostel at the college, allegedly orchestrated a plan to eliminate Raj.

Rajeev Mishra, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Patna, informed PTI, “Chandan Kumar is the primary suspect in this case and is currently being interrogated.” The tragic incident occurred as the 22-year-old student was leaving his examination venue in the afternoon. After being attacked by a group of students, he sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

Following questioning, Kumar reportedly admitted to his involvement in the crime and disclosed the identities of other individuals implicated in the incident, according to a statement from Patna Police. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend the other suspects.

“Initial investigations suggest that the motive behind the attack may stem from long-standing animosity. However, a conclusive determination of the circumstances can only be reached upon completion of the probe,” stated a senior official from the Patna Police.

Law enforcement has initiated a search operation to locate the remaining suspects.

In response to the murder, various student groups staged demonstrations in different parts of the city and outside Patna University to denounce the violence. Some protesters attempted to disrupt traffic flow by setting tyres ablaze at Kargil Chowk.

Meanwhile, the tragic incident has ignited a political dispute between the opposition RJD and the ruling NDA government in the state.

RJD leader and former Deputy Chief Minister, Tejashwi Yadav, expressed his outrage, stating, “The reprehensible nature of this incident is deeply troubling. It is a clear indication of lawlessness when a student is brutally murdered within the confines of a college campus. Where are the leaders of the BJP? Why are they silent on this matter? Why have they failed to condemn this act?” He went on to allege that the state’s law and order situation has deteriorated since the NDA government assumed power in Bihar.

Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Vijay Kumar Sinha, expressed his condolences, saying, “This is a tragic event. I am in constant communication with senior officials of the administration, and we are committed to swiftly apprehending all suspects involved. Stringent punishment will be meted out to those responsible.”
