BIRMINGHAM, UK – The Birmingham Police Department has announced a significant development in the investigation of a fatal shooting that took place at a gas station in early May. Officer Truman Fitzgerald confirmed that an arrest has been made in connection with the incident, which resulted in the death of one individual and injuries to six others.

Victim identified as David Westbrook

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, May 5, at the Shell Gas Station located on 800 3rd Avenue West. The victim, identified as 24-year-old David Westbrook from Wartrace, Tennessee, succumbed to his injuries sustained during the shooting.

Suspect Identified and Arrested

Following the release of photos of a person of interest in the case, 21-year-old Armonta Davis was identified as a suspect. Davis voluntarily surrendered himself to police custody on the same day and was subsequently transferred to the Birmingham City Jail. He is currently under a 48-hour felony extension and faces charges of attempted murder and first-degree assault. Davis will be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail for further proceedings.

Details of the Shooting Incident

According to reports, the Birmingham Police Department received multiple Shot Spotter alerts in the vicinity of the 700 and 800 blocks of 3rd Avenue West during the early hours of May 5. Upon arrival at the scene, officers encountered a chaotic situation, with a white sedan crashed into a utility pole and multiple individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.

Emergency responders from Birmingham Fire and Rescue (BFR) attended to the victims, with one individual pronounced dead at the scene and others transported to nearby hospitals with life-threatening injuries. Additional gunshot victims arrived at hospitals by private vehicles in the aftermath of the shooting.

Investigation and Arrests

Police believe that multiple parties were involved in the shooting, with over 150 rounds fired during the incident. Operation Knight Rider officers assisted in apprehending two persons of interest who were observed fleeing the scene and attempting to discard firearms.

With the arrest of Armonta Davis and ongoing investigations, the Birmingham Police Department is treating this case as the 42nd murder investigation of 2024, with four justifiable death rulings thus far.
