A 30-year-old man from Macungie, who has worked as a substitute teacher in various schools in Lehigh County, has been accused of committing indecent assault against a 17-year-old girl. Jared Matthew Gerhard allegedly approached the girl from behind while she was shopping with her family at the Marshall’s store on Hamilton Boulevard in Lower Macungie Township.

The incident occurred when Gerhard reportedly reached between the girl’s legs and touched her inappropriately. The victim immediately screamed, prompting Gerhard to flee the scene. Despite a witness attempting to detain him, Gerhard managed to escape, leading to a police pursuit.

Police Pursuit and Arrest

State police responded to the scene and observed a vehicle speeding through the parking lot and onto Mill Creek Road. The driver was later identified as Gerhard and was stopped by law enforcement. Upon searching the vehicle, authorities discovered items from the store, linking Gerhard to the incident.

Charges and Bail

Gerhard has been formally charged with unlawful contact with a minor, classified as a third-degree felony, and indecent assault without consent of another, considered a second-degree misdemeanor. Following his arraignment, Gerhard was released after posting $35,000 bail.

The Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office has urged anyone with information regarding this incident or similar offences to contact the Pennsylvania State Police in Fogelsville at 610-395-1438. The release did not specify the identities of the schools where Gerhard had been employed as a substitute.
