CULLMAN, Ala. (WBRC) – Authorities in Cullman have obtained several warrants, including murder and assault charges, for a Tennessee man believed to be responsible for a fatal police chase that resulted in the death of a woman.
The incident, which began in Hartselle and ended in Cullman on May 24, claimed the life of Ellarea Dickson, 77, and left her granddaughter Alyssa critically injured. Alyssa is currently receiving treatment at Huntsville Hospital for multiple severe injuries sustained in the crash.
Michael Neal Ivy, 39, hailing from Middleton, Tennessee, has been identified as the driver of the vehicle involved in the pursuit. In addition to the murder and first-degree assault charges, Ivy faces allegations of felony attempting to elude, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment, and various traffic violations.
Upon his release from the hospital, Ivy will be transferred to the Cullman County Detention Center where he will be held without bond.
Sheriff Matt Gentry expressed his condolences for the tragic loss, stating, “One of the hardest things about law enforcement is having to deal with other people’s bad decisions. These actions often put us in no-win situations. We do everything in our power to keep the citizens safe, but sometimes tragedy still strikes. Mrs. Dickson was a wonderful, sweet lady that I had an opportunity to get to know over the years. I had spoken with her on several occasions at community meetings, as well as at KFC. Losing her is an absolute tragedy. We will be with her family every step of the way to ensure that prosecution is carried out to the fullest extent of the law. Our prayers and deepest condolences will continue to be with the family and friends of Mrs. Dickson.”
