Two individuals lost their lives and 17 others sustained injuries in separate incidents due to heavy rains and strong winds brought about by cyclone Remal, which wreaked havoc in Assam on Tuesday, according to officials.

The first casualty was Putul Gogoi, who tragically lost his life in a landslide triggered by relentless rainfall at the under-construction NHPC’s Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power project in Gerukamukh, located in Lakhimpur district.

Another victim, a 17-year-old college student named Kausik Bordoloi Amphi, was fatally injured when a tree fell on the auto-rickshaw he was travelling in at Dighalbori in Morigaon district. The incident also left four other passengers injured.

In Dhekiajuli, situated in Sonitpur district, a tree fell on a school bus, resulting in injuries to 12 children who were promptly admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Moreover, a resident of Palashbari in Kamrup district sustained injuries while attempting to dodge a falling tree during the severe weather conditions.

Chief Minister’s Response

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged the ongoing inclement weather and warned that the adverse conditions are likely to persist.

Impact on Infrastructure

The Dima Hasao district bore the brunt of the calamity, with road connectivity between Haflong and Cachar being disrupted. Traffic restrictions were imposed on the Jatinga-Harangajao route, necessitating heavy vehicles bound for Barak Valley to detour through Meghalaya.

Chief Minister Sarma shared updates on the situation, highlighting landslides in Kapircherrra (NH-27, Haflong to Silchar) and ThereBasati (Umrangso-Dehangi Road), along with the damage inflicted on a BSNL tower in Haflong, triggering evacuation efforts.

Infrastructure Damage and Disruptions

Widespread uprooting of trees occurred across the state, including in Guwahati, due to the powerful winds. The lower Assam region experienced power outages as electric poles toppled, while towns reported instances of water-logging.

Several districts, such as Kamrup (Metro), Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, Sonitpur, Bongaigaon, Darrang, and Dima Hasao, were severely affected by the inclement weather.

Response and Precautionary Measures

Schools and educational institutions in Morigaon, Nagaon, and Dima Hasao remained closed until further notice, as per directives from the authorities.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued warnings of extremely heavy rainfall across the state as a consequence of the cyclone’s impact.

Ferry services in multiple districts, including Guwahati, Jorhat, Tezpur, Morigaon, Dhubri, Goalpara, South Salmara, Barpeta, Cachar, and Karimganj, were suspended due to the adverse weather conditions.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority advised residents to avoid residing in vulnerable structures, steer clear of water-logged areas, stock up on essential supplies, and promptly contact authorities in case of emergencies.

In anticipation of the evolving situation, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) remain on high alert to provide assistance as needed.

Assessment of Damage

Officials are currently evaluating the extent of damage caused by the storm and heavy rainfall, with efforts underway to address the aftermath of the natural disaster.
