Severe weather conditions, including heavy rains and strong winds following cyclone Remal, have led to widespread devastation in Assam. The aftermath of the natural disaster has resulted in two fatalities and injuries to at least 17 individuals, according to officials.

One of the tragic incidents occurred at the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power project in Gerukamukh, Lakhimpur district, where Putul Gogoi lost his life in a landslide caused by continuous rainfall. In a separate incident, a 17-year-old college student named Kausik Bordoloi Amphi was killed when a tree fell on the auto-rickshaw he was travelling in at Dighalbori, Morigaon district. The vehicle was carrying a total of five individuals, all of whom sustained injuries.

Furthermore, in Sonitpur district’s Dhekiajuli, a tree fell on a school bus, resulting in injuries to 12 children who were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Additionally, in the Palashbari area of Kamrup district, another individual sustained injuries while trying to avoid a falling tree.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a warning that the inclement weather is likely to persist. He urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and stay safe during this challenging time. The government is closely monitoring the situation and has instructed officials to respond promptly to any emergencies that may arise.

The impact of the heavy rainfall was particularly severe in the Dima Hasao district, where road connectivity between Haflong and Cachar was disrupted. As a result, traffic restrictions have been imposed along the Jatinga-Harangajao route, with heavy vehicles bound for Barak Valley being redirected through Meghalaya.

Efforts are underway to assess the extent of the damage caused by the severe weather conditions and provide assistance to those affected. The government is working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents of Assam during this challenging period.
