Accident – Death – Obituary News : The latest updates from Sri Lanka reveal that security forces suspect a 46-year-old man of acting as a handler for the four Sri Lankan nationals recently apprehended at Ahmedabad airport in India on suspicion of ties to the banned Islamic State (ISIS) group. According to reports, Sri Lanka Police have identified the wanted suspect as Osmand Gerrard, a resident of Dematagoda, who is known to frequently change his appearance in an attempt to evade capture. In light of this development, Sri Lanka Police have offered a cash reward of Rs. 2 million for any credible information leading to the whereabouts of Gerrard.

On May 19, the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) made the significant arrest of the four Sri Lankans with suspected links to ISIS at Sardar Vallabhai Patel airport in Ahmedabad. During the operation, ATS officials also discovered three pistols and cartridges at a location in Ahmedabad, as well as a mobile phone in possession of the suspects. It was revealed that the four individuals had boarded an Indigo flight from Colombo to Chennai on the same day.

Among the arrested individuals, Mohammed Nusrat, a businessman dealing in the importation of telecommunication devices and electrical equipment from countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and Dubai, was identified. Nusrat primarily operated within Colombo, selling these imported goods to local customers. Another detainee, Mohammad Nafran, 27, is reported to be the son of Niyas Naufer, also known as ‘Potta Naufer,’ a notorious underworld figure who received a death sentence for the murder of High Court Judge Sarath Ambepitiya. The remaining two suspects are 35-year-old Mohammad Faris from Maligawatte, Colombo, and 43-year-old Mohammad Rashdeen from Colombo 13.

Mohammad Faris, who previously worked as a ‘Nattami’ or cart puller in Pettah, had multiple encounters with law enforcement, including arrests by the Colombo Crimes Division in March and November of 2023. His associate, Hameed Amir, was arrested by the Terrorist Investigations Division on May 21. Mohammad Faris departed for Chennai on the same day as the other suspects.

Mohammad Rashdeen, identified as a three-wheeler driver, is suspected of involvement in the trafficking of crystal meth, or ICE. He was previously arrested by the Foreshore Police on September 16, 2022, and subsequently released on bail. In response to these developments, Sri Lankan authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation into the activities of the four individuals arrested in Gujarat.
