A teacher has expressed concerns about a popular ABC TV news show for children that is widely shown in schools across Australia following a recent episode focusing on gender and romantic identities.

The teacher contacted Sydney radio station 2GB to bring attention to an episode of Behind The News (BTN) that was screened during a class at a school in Sydney.

The particular episode featured a segment dedicated to the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), observed globally on May 17.

This day commemorates the removal of homosexuality from the World Health Organization’s list of classified diseases over thirty years ago.

During the episode, high school students from Henley High School in South Australia identified themselves as ‘aroace’ and ‘agender’, sparking confusion among the students in the class.

‘I use he/him pronouns and I’m aroace and agender,’ one student named Alex mentioned.

‘I go by any pronouns just because I don’t really care and I think I’m aroace, I don’t really do the labelling thing, I just describe it,’ another student, Ruby, added.

The introduction of these terms led the students to inquire about the meaning of ‘aroace’, leaving the teacher, who was unfamiliar with the term, at a loss.

Aroace is a shortened form of ‘aromantic asexual’, describing individuals who do not experience romantic attraction. Aromanticism signifies a lack of desire to engage in romantic relationships, although those identifying as aroace can cultivate non-romantic connections with others.

Furthermore, Aroace encompasses various classifications, akin to sexual orientations, indicating the type of romantic attraction a person may feel or experience.

The students who saw the BTN episode asked the teacher what the term 'aroace' meant leaving the teacher - who had never heard of the term - stumped (pictured, a still from the BTN episode)

According to guidelines from the NSW Department of Education, BTN episodes serve as supplementary resources to enhance student learning and should align with the curriculum.

These resources aim to stimulate engagement with course material and encourage a personal understanding of the content.

Gender and sexuality education is integrated into NSW school curricula through Personal Development Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) classes, as well as English, History, and Society and Culture subjects.

Daily Mail Australia reached out to the NSW Department of Education and the ABC for comments on the matter.
