In a recent controversy in Agartala, Tripura, Leader of Opposition Jitendra Choudhary accused a poverty-stricken mother of selling her child due to administrative apathy. However, Tripura Minister Sushanta Choudhary, who is also the cabinet spokesperson, refuted these claims.

According to Choudhary, the opposition party attempted to twist the incident to put pressure on the state government. In reality, the mother, Marmari Tripura, willingly donated her sixth child to a childless couple from Hejamara. The adoption process faced legal complications, leading to misunderstandings.

The Minister explained, “Marmari Tripura’s family situation is challenging. Her husband passed away six months ago, leaving her with five children to care for. Despite her hardships, she ensured her children’s education and well-being. When she couldn’t abort her sixth child due to medical reasons, she chose to give the baby to a childless couple.”

Detailing the handover process, Choudhary stated, “On May 22, Marmari gave birth to her sixth child and entrusted the baby to Binay Kumar Debbarma and Sashichandra Debbarma. Although the adoption wasn’t legally valid, the authorities intervened to ensure the mother and newborn received necessary care.”

Accusing the Leader of the Opposition of exploiting the situation for political gain, the Minister criticised the attempt to take credit for resolving the matter. He described the opposition’s actions as a scripted drama, distorting facts for personal motives.

The incident sheds light on the complexities of adoption procedures and the challenges faced by vulnerable families in Tripura. It also highlights the importance of proper counselling and support for mothers in difficult circumstances.

As the case continues to unfold, it serves as a reminder of the need for compassion and understanding in addressing sensitive issues concerning child welfare and family dynamics.
