Accident – Death – Obituary News :

As Penticton celebrates 50 years since hosting the BC Summer Games for the first time, the city is set to welcome the games back in 2028. Alongside Penticton, Kamloops, the original host of the BC Winter Games, will also see the return of the event in February of the same year.

The upcoming games will bring together hundreds of student athletes from all corners of British Columbia, representing every geographical zone of the province. These young athletes will converge on Penticton and Kamloops to not only showcase their athletic talents but also to forge connections with their fellow competitors.

Reflecting on the evolution of the games over the past five decades, Penticton Mayor Julius Bloomfield noted a shift in focus from pure competition to community building and athlete development within the province. He emphasised the importance of using the games as a platform to strengthen and unite the communities of Penticton and Kamloops.

Penticton has a rich history of hosting various BC Games, including the inaugural BC Summer Games in 1978, the 1990 BC Winter Games, the 1995 BC Summer Games, and the 2016 BC Winter Games. Meanwhile, Kamloops has previously hosted three games, with 2028 marking its fourth hosting opportunity after the 1979 BC Winter Games, the 2006 BC Summer Games, and the 2018 BC Winter Games.

Both Penticton and Kamloops will serve as hosts on traditional and unceded territory, with representatives from the local Indigenous bands participating in the announcement ceremonies held in each city. Penticton Indian Band Chief Greg Gabriel expressed his support for bringing youth together in a healthy and active environment, highlighting the importance of showcasing their talents and providing inspiration for a positive lifestyle.

Perfect Host Communities

When selecting the hosts for the 2028 games, Penticton and Kamloops were identified as ideal communities due to their unique qualities. Known as Canada’s Tournament Capital, Kamloops boasts a reputation as a hub for sporting and cultural events, hosting over 100 events annually. On the other hand, Penticton attracts year-round events in various sports and beyond, thanks to its engaged base of more than 5,000 active volunteers.

Niki Remesz, the Chair of the BC Games Society, praised the selection of Penticton and Kamloops as hosts, citing the long history of the games in Penticton since 1978. She highlighted the seamless collaboration between the cities, local First Nations, school districts, and the BC Games Society in organising the event.

Furthermore, the BC Games Society extends its support to Team BC at the Canada Games, reinforcing its commitment to nurturing young athletes and promoting sports excellence in the province.
