Revered as the patron god of warriors, Tezcatlipoca also symbolized the night sky and the north direction. In Aztec dualism, he embodied both positive qualities such as beauty and effective governance, as well as negative aspects like death and chaos.
Across various Mesoamerican cultures, Tezcatlipoca was viewed as the supreme being, with other deities seen as lesser manifestations of him. In Aztec mythology, there were four Tezcatlipoca beings, divine children of Ometeotl. The White Tezcatlipoca was known as Quetzalcoatl, the Black Tezcatlipoca was identified as Tezcatlipoca, the Blue Tezcatlipoca was the war god Huitzilopochtli, and the Red Tezcatlipoca was also called Xipe Totec. Tezcatlipoca was often depicted as black with a yellow stripe across his face and a smoking mirror for a foot, earning him the moniker “Smoking Mirror.”
Tezcatlipoca played a crucial role in the Aztec creation myth, working alongside Quetzalcoatl to shape the present world by defeating the earth mother monster Tlatcuhtli. Despite their cooperation, Tezcatlipoca and Quetzalcoatl had a tumultuous relationship, reflecting Tezcatlipoca’s nature as a god of conflict and violent change.
Known as the “Lord of the Near and Far,” Tezcatlipoca was perceived as all-seeing and omnipotent, with the power to influence everything and everyone. His enigmatic nature as a deity of aristocracy, feasts, warriors, night, death, and sorcery made him a complex figure for worshippers to comprehend.
In comparing Tezcatlipoca to other supreme deities, similarities can be drawn with the Inca’s sky god, Hindu’s Brahman, and the Chinese deity Shangdi. These parallels highlight the widespread belief in a supreme being across diverse cultures, reflecting a common thread in human thought.
