A man from Yuma, Arizona has been taken into custody for allegedly starting a wildfire in a national wildlife preserve located in southwest Arizona near the California border. The suspect, 47-year-old Jason Bradley Martin, is facing charges of arson, criminal damage, and other offenses, according to authorities.

Yuma County Sheriff’s officials announced on Saturday night that Martin was identified as the suspect in the case and was subsequently arrested. As of Sunday, the county jail’s website did not list an attorney for Martin.

The wildfire broke out around 2 p.m. on Saturday in the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge, a protected area established in 1941 to safeguard 30 miles (48 kilometers) of predominantly wetland habitat along the Lower Colorado River.

Authorities reported that the blaze has affected nearly 2 square miles (5 square kilometers) of vegetation along the Arizona side of the Colorado River in Yuma County. The fire is currently 20% contained, with firefighting crews working diligently to suppress the flames.

Various agencies, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the federal Bureau of Land Management, responded to the scene to provide assistance to the firefighting efforts on Saturday.
