Accident – Death – Obituary News :

On Monday, authorities in Sheikhupura made a significant breakthrough in a disturbing child marriage case. At least one suspect has been apprehended in connection with the marriage of a five-year-old girl to a 13-year-old boy in the Kot Nazir area.

The police conducted a raid, leading to the arrest of the suspect. Additional raids are currently underway to capture other individuals involved in this shocking incident.

It is crucial to highlight that in Punjab, the legal age for marriage is 16 years old. Despite this law, child marriages continue to occur in the province at an alarming rate.

A spokesperson for the police revealed that a case has been registered under the Child Marriage Act by an assistant sub-inspector from the Sadar Muredke police station.

The first information report (FIR) stated that the children were being forced into marriage and that the suspects fled when the police arrived at the scene.

According to the FIR, the child’s grandfather, Yousaf, confessed that he and his son, Muzammil Abbas, were complicit in arranging the marriage of their young relative.

The FIR also implicated the father of the underage girl, Imran, her grandfather Amjad, as well as individuals named Bashir and Akram Suleman alias Chana. The arrangements for the marriage were allegedly made by a suspect named Arshad, and the nikah was conducted by a suspect identified as Umar Hayat.

Legal Ramifications

Under the Child Marriage Restraint (Amendment) Act 2015, those involved in arranging marriages for underage children face strict penalties. In 2015, Punjab amended the Child Marriage Restraint Ordinance 1971 and passed the Punjab Marriage Restraint Act 2015, setting the legal age for marriage at 16 years.

Furthermore, the Punjab government is taking steps to introduce the Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Act, 2024 to prevent marriages of individuals under the age of 18.

Individuals who marry or arrange marriages for minors under the age of 18 can face imprisonment ranging from two to three years and fines between one to two lakh rupees. Those who register such marriages can also be subject to imprisonment and fines.

Parents or guardians who facilitate, support, or permit the marriage of minor children may face imprisonment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, along with fines ranging from Rs100,000 to Rs200,000.

These stringent measures aim to deter individuals from engaging in child marriages and protect the rights and well-being of vulnerable minors.
