A severe cyclone named Remal has wreaked havoc in three coastal districts of West Bengal, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The cyclone, which made landfall on Sunday night after crossing Bangladesh, resulted in the tragic deaths of two individuals and the displacement of approximately 200,000 people.

Loss of Life and Property

The destructive force of Cyclone Remal claimed the lives of two individuals in West Bengal. One victim, Md Sajid, aged 50, tragically lost his life when a concrete slab fell on him in Kolkata’s Entally area. Another victim, an 80-year-old woman named Renuka Mondal, was killed in Frazerganj in South 24 Parganas district when an uprooted tree fell on her.

Extent of Damage

The impact of the cyclone was felt most strongly in areas such as Sagar Island, Diamond Harbour, Jharkhali, Hingalganj, and Sandeshkhali. Reports of widespread destruction poured in from these locations, highlighting the severity of the damage caused by Cyclone Remal.

Rescue and Relief Efforts

Efforts are underway to provide assistance to those affected by the cyclone. In North 24 Parganas district, where no fatalities were reported, around 30,000 individuals were evacuated to safety. Similarly, in South 24 Parganas district, over 150,000 people were relocated to secure locations, with maximum damage reported in areas such as Sagar, Namkhana, Basanti, Kultali, Patharpratima, and Gosaba.

Continued Impact and Weather Conditions

Even as the cyclone passed over the region, strong winds continued to batter West Bengal on Monday morning. Areas such as Dum Dum, Canning, and Sagar Island recorded significant wind speeds, indicating the lingering impact of Cyclone Remal.

IMD Alerts and Predictions

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued warnings for districts such as Nadia and Murshidabad in West Bengal, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in these areas. As Cyclone Remal moves through Bangladesh, its intensity is expected to diminish, but the risk of heavy rainfall remains for certain regions.
