Authorities have identified the victims of a tragic shooting near Mount Trashmore Park’s Summer Carnival in Virginia Beach. The victims are a 15-year-old girl who tragically lost her life and an 18-year-old man who is currently in critical condition.

The Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) released a statement revealing that the fatal shooting was a result of a fight that started inside the carnival earlier in the evening. Off-duty Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office deputies had to intervene to break up the altercation. The conflict then escalated and spilled over into the parking lot on Edwin Drive, where the tragic incident occurred at around 8:30 p.m.

According to VBPD, the dispute outside the carnival involved at least one individual who had a firearm and opened fire, striking the teenage victims. Both teenagers were rushed to the hospital for medical attention. Tragically, the 15-year-old girl, whose identity has not been disclosed, succumbed to her injuries. The 18-year-old man remains in a critical condition.

Police Chief Condemns Youth Gun Violence

Police Chief Paul Neudigate expressed his distress over the rise in youth gun violence in the community, calling it “disturbing and reprehensible.” He highlighted the tragic loss of young lives and the devastating impact on families caused by such senseless acts of violence.

Authorities at the scene described the shooting as chaotic, and as of now, there is no information on the suspect. VBPD is urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Detective Bureau at 757-385-4101.

Increased Security Measures at the Carnival

The Mount Trashmore Summer Carnival, which opened on Friday night and was scheduled to continue until June 19, will reopen with heightened security measures. The City of Virginia Beach confirmed that there will be an increased presence of law enforcement at the carnival, including Virginia Beach police, Sheriff deputies, and private security personnel.
