The Singapore Airlines (SIA) aircraft, which encountered severe air turbulence on May 21 resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries, has safely returned to Singapore after being granted clearance for departure.

According to a spokesperson from SIA, the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft with registration number 9V-SWM was flown back from Bangkok and successfully landed in Singapore at 1.39pm on May 26.

The spokesperson stated, “SIA received approval from the relevant authorities in Singapore and Thailand, as well as from investigators and the aircraft manufacturer. The aircraft underwent thorough checks by our Engineering and Flight Operations teams before being cleared for departure.”

SIA is fully cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation into the incident.

Flight SQ321 encountered turbulence over the Irrawaddy Basin in Myanmar, approximately 10 hours into its journey from London to Singapore. The pilot made the decision to divert the plane to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport after declaring a medical emergency. The aircraft made an emergency landing at 3.45pm local time.

Among the 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board SQ321, 41 were Singaporeans, while the rest hailed from countries such as Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Britain.

The deceased passenger has been identified as 73-year-old British national Mr. Geoff Kitchen. Reports indicate that he was a retired insurance professional and musical theatre director. Mr. Kitchen and his wife, who was also on the flight and later hospitalized, were en route to a six-week holiday with plans to visit Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, and Australia.

As of May 25, SIA reported that 44 individuals, including 43 passengers and one crew member, remained hospitalized following the incident.
