In a tragic incident, three children lost their lives while bathing in the Garrah river in Shahjahanpur on Saturday. The victims, identified as Shivam (10), Harendra (12), siblings, and their cousin Sheeshpal (12), were swept away by the strong currents of the river.
The circle officer (Sadar), Amit Kumar Chaurasia, stated that the children had gone to the river to cool off in the sweltering heat. However, they failed to return home, prompting their family to launch a search operation. The bodies of the children were eventually recovered by villagers with the assistance of divers.
According to Chaurasia, the family reported that the children had left the house around 10:30 am and were found around 1 pm. The preliminary investigation suggests that the children lost their footing and drowned in the fast-flowing river.
Recent Incidents in Ganga Canal
Tragically, this incident comes on the heels of another drowning in the Ganga canal in Muzaffarnagar. Sonu, aged 35, lost his life while bathing in the canal on the same day, marking the fourth drowning incident in the canal within a span of just six days.
Earlier, two boys aged nine and 13 had drowned in the Ganga canal in Muzaffarnagar, followed by another 12-year-old boy meeting a similar fate a day later. Locals have voiced concerns over the safety of the newly-constructed bridge over the Ganga, which has become a popular bathing spot despite the risks involved.
