WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has released body-worn camera footage of an incident that occurred over the weekend, involving an officer shooting a man during a welfare check.

Police officers were initially called to the Columbia Plaza apartment complex in the 2400 block of Virginia Avenue NW for a welfare check on an individual in crisis just before 10:40 a.m, according to an MPD community briefing.

Despite not locating the individual, later identified as 28-year-old Jonathan Jefferson, officers attempted to address the issues raised in the initial call for help.

Returning to the scene around 1:55 p.m., MPD found Jefferson outside the apartment’s entrance. After engaging with him and requesting assistance from the Department of Behavior Health (DBH), who arrived promptly, the Community Response Team (CRT) encouraged Jefferson to agree to an emergency psychiatric evaluation, which he declined.

During the conversation, Jefferson made a move to his pocket, prompting an officer to instruct him to remove his hand. However, Jefferson refused to comply. Subsequently, at approximately 2:23 p.m., DBH team members decided to take Jefferson for an involuntary psychiatric evaluation.

When three MPD officers, along with a sergeant and a CRT member, approached Jefferson, he resisted, leading to a confrontation where Jefferson pulled out a knife and attempted to slash one of the officers. The sergeant discharged an electronic control device (ECD), but it had little effect, as stated in the community briefing.

Despite efforts to subdue Jefferson, he continued to pose a threat, prompting the sergeant to discharge their firearm multiple times, ultimately hitting Jefferson. He was then apprehended by the police and transported to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds to his hand and thigh. The officer who was stabbed also received medical attention and was later released from the hospital.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia is currently reviewing the incident, and once their assessment is complete, MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau’s Force Investigation Team will conduct further investigations.
