A distressing incident has come to light in Tripura, where a 37-year-old tribal woman was reportedly coerced into selling her newborn baby girl due to extreme poverty. The incident occurred in the Gandacherra subdivision, just a day after the baby’s birth. The woman, identified as Mormati Tripura, had recently lost her husband and was struggling to support her family.

Tragic Circumstances

Mormati Tripura, a resident of Taraban Colony in Gandacherra subdivision, gave birth to a daughter at home on Wednesday. Following the tragic death of her husband five months prior, she found herself in a dire financial situation. With the responsibility of four children weighing heavily on her, Mormati felt she had no choice but to sell her newborn.

Desperate Measures

After the death of her husband, Mormati had considered aborting the pregnancy. However, a doctor advised against it and provided her with necessary medications during the final months of her pregnancy. Despite the doctor’s support, Mormati felt overwhelmed by the financial burden and made the difficult decision to sell her child to a couple in Hezamara for Rs 5,000.

Rescue Operation

Upon learning of the situation, the Chief Secretary of the state intervened, leading to the rescue of the baby girl from the couple she had been sold to. The newborn was reunited with her mother, providing a glimmer of hope in an otherwise tragic tale.
