Preliminary investigations into the tragic incident that claimed the life of a 13-year-old boy in Buffalo Township, UK, and left his friend injured have indicated that factors such as sun glare and the road’s geology may have played a significant role.
The incident occurred on Friday evening on Cole Road in Buffalo Township when emergency services responded to a collision involving two boys on bicycles and a pickup truck.
The victim, identified as Dylan Tarbi, 13, from Buffalo Township, was airlifted to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries at 8:22 p.m.
The other boy involved was taken to a local medical facility by his parents for treatment.
Chief Tim Derringer of the Buffalo Township Police revealed that initial findings suggest the driver of the black pickup truck involved in the collision may have been blinded by the sun while driving over a hill, resulting in the tragic accident.
As of Saturday, no charges have been filed against the driver, whose identity has not been disclosed.
Chief Derringer stated, “The investigation is ongoing, and a decision will be made once all evidence has been reviewed. At this point, it appears to be a heartbreaking accident.”
The boys were reportedly cycling on the correct side of the road in line with traffic flow, approximately a mile away from their destination – a local store.
Authorities are examining footage from a dash camera installed in the pickup truck, as the surviving boy is currently the only known witness to the tragic event.
Chief Derringer confirmed that the driver of the pickup truck was not under the influence of any substances, stopped immediately after the collision, and cooperated fully with law enforcement.
The driver, a resident of Buffalo Township, remained at the scene following the incident.
Dylan Tarbi was unresponsive at the scene, while his friend was able to walk and communicate before being taken to the hospital for evaluation of minor injuries.
