BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Authorities at Western Kentucky University have reported that a man is now facing a series of charges, including operating a motor vehicle under the influence, following a collision incident.

As detailed in a uniform citation, campus police were on patrol late Friday night around 11:36 p.m. in the vicinity of Normal Street and Regents Drive when they encountered the situation.

The officers observed a man, identified as 20-year-old Zachary P. Upright from Bowling Green, Kentucky, standing near two vehicles that had been involved in a collision on Normal Street at the intersection of the Minton Hall lot stop sign.

According to the citation, Upright admitted to rear-ending the other vehicle in the collision. However, the other individual involved in the incident claimed that Upright drove around her vehicle and attempted to flee the scene, heading south on Normal Street. Upright only stopped when the other driver followed him and demanded he pull over.

Upon approaching Upright, officers noted signs of impairment such as slurred speech, stumbling, and the smell of alcohol on his breath. Additionally, Upright’s actions were deemed to have posed a significant risk of physical harm to others.

Following the incident, Upright was taken into custody and transported to the Warren County Detention Center and Medical Center at Bowling Green for a blood test, which was conducted after a search warrant was obtained.

Charges and Legal Ramifications

Upright now faces a range of charges, including leaving the scene of an accident without providing aid or assistance, operating a motor vehicle under the influence (first offense with aggravating circumstances), first-degree criminal mischief, and second-degree wanton endangerment.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident to determine the full extent of the damage and any additional legal actions that may be taken against Upright.
