In a recent development, a Gwinnett County jury has convicted two men, Corey Myart and Gabriel Morales, for the murder of Malik Werts during a home invasion and attempted marijuana heist in 2020. The Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office announced that Myart and Morales were found guilty of murder and aggravated assault, with Myart also facing charges of felony home invasion.

According to officials, the incident took place on January 31, 2020, when Myart and Morales carried out a home invasion after learning that Werts’ roommate was involved in selling marijuana and keeping significant quantities of the drug in their Norcross apartment. The duo planned to rob the roommate after discovering the presence of drugs in the apartment.

On the morning of the home invasion, as Werts’ roommate was loading a U-Haul truck, he encountered Myart and Morales, engaging in conversation and even offering Myart a cigarette before returning to the apartment. Moments later, the two men burst into the apartment wielding handguns, with Morales forcing the roommate to the floor while Myart searched the premises. Gunshots were heard from the room where Werts was located, leading to his tragic demise.

After the shooting, witnesses reported seeing Morales and Myart fleeing the scene in a black car, prompting them to alert the authorities. The DA’s office revealed that the roommate had been introduced to Morales by an acquaintance the day before the incident, with both men expressing interest in the availability of marijuana. The roommate provided investigators with crucial information that led to the identification of Morales and Myart.

Further investigations revealed that the car used in the crime belonged to Myart’s brother, Cobe Myart, who is also facing charges in connection to the incident and is awaiting trial. Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin Gatson emphasized the consequences of criminal actions, stating that the verdict serves as a reminder that individuals must be held accountable for their decisions.

Both Corey Myart and Gabriel Morales are currently awaiting sentencing and could potentially face life imprisonment for their roles in the tragic events. The DA’s office continues to pursue justice for the victim, Malik Werts, and his grieving family.
