An 18-year-old man has been charged by San Bernardino County prosecutors this week in connection with the fatal shooting of a U.S. Marine in Twentynine Palms, as well as the alleged attempted murder of two other individuals, authorities have confirmed.
The suspect, identified as Rudy Garcia Jr., is accused of killing 35-year-old Robert James McDonald on Monday night while McDonald was seated in his car with his dog, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Department. McDonald, who was an active-duty gunnery sergeant stationed with the Marine Corps Logistic Operations Group in Twentynine Palms, tragically lost his life in the incident.
Authorities responded to reports of a disturbance involving a group of four or five individuals near the intersection of Old Dale Road and Alpine Avenue. Following a confrontation with a neighbour, Garcia allegedly fired several rounds from a gun towards the neighbour and another individual. Fortunately, neither individual was injured, and Garcia fled the scene.
Subsequently, Garcia approached McDonald, who was parked near a dog park on Foothill Drive, and allegedly opened fire at the vehicle in what authorities believe was an attempted carjacking. Despite McDonald’s efforts to drive away, he was struck multiple times and ultimately crashed into another vehicle. Tragically, McDonald succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
After a brief search, sheriff’s deputies located Garcia near the scene of the shooting and took him into custody. A handgun believed to have been used in the incident was also recovered in the area.
The district attorney’s office has charged Garcia with a range of offences, including murder, attempted carjacking, attempted robbery, attempted murder, and assault with a semiautomatic firearm. Special allegations have also been filed in connection with the case.
