A 22-year-old man from Texas has avoided prison time after being accused of kidnapping a woman he met on the Bumble dating app and subjecting her to a week of physical and sexual assault. Zachary Kent Mills reached a plea deal with prosecutors, which saw him sentenced to two years of probation and 80 hours of community service by Harris County Criminal Court Judge Genesis Draper. Additionally, Mills is required to abstain from drugs and alcohol, have no contact with the victim, and make a donation to a women’s shelter.

Mills, who initially faced a felony charge of aggravated kidnapping, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of misdemeanor assault causing bodily injury as part of the agreement with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. He received deferred adjudication, meaning that if he successfully completes his probation, the charge against him will be dismissed.

Following his arrest, Mills’ attorney denied the allegations, suggesting that there may be more to the story and hinting at a history between Mills and the victim. The incident came to light when deputies from the Harris County Constable’s Office Precinct 4 responded to a call about a female patient who had been assaulted.

The victim, referred to as “J.W.” in court documents, stated that she had met Mills on Bumble and agreed to visit his apartment on Christmas Eve. However, upon arrival, Mills allegedly attempted to sexually assault her, leading to a prolonged period of physical and sexual abuse. J.W. eventually managed to escape when Mills left the residence.

Medical personnel at the emergency care center where J.W. sought help documented severe bruising, bite marks, and cuts on her body. Mills was arrested the next day and later released on bond.

Despite the outcome of the case, the incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that can accompany online dating. It highlights the importance of exercising caution when meeting strangers and being vigilant about personal safety.
