Recent research conducted by the online education platform Internet of Learning has shed light on the crime rates in popular student neighbourhoods surrounding leading universities in England and Wales. By analysing police crime data and calculating the number of crimes per 100 people over the past 12 months, the study has identified the safest and most concerning areas for students.
Safest Student Neighbourhoods
Exeter, specifically the Heavitree & Polsloe area, emerges as the safest borough, with a low rate of only 4.1 reported crimes per 100 people. Over the last year, a total of 528 crimes were recorded in this region, significantly fewer than Cathays, despite the latter being 55% larger in population. Instances of robbery and weapon possession were minimal, with only four and three reported incidents, respectively.
In Lancaster, the Scotforth West boundary stands out with only 336 crimes among its population of 7,019, equating to 4.8 crimes per 100 people in the past year. Notably, crimes such as shoplifting were limited to just three offences in this area.
Falmouth follows closely behind, with 4.9 crimes per 100 people. The Arwenack & Boslowick borough, particularly around Buddock Terrace where students often reside, experienced significantly fewer crimes compared to Cathays, showcasing a safer environment for students.
Ranked fourth is Chester, with Hoole serving as the student area boundary. The region reported a total of 5.6 crimes per 100 people, with incidents of serious crimes like robbery being scarce, having been reported only once in the past year.
Student Areas with the Highest Crime Rates
Cathays in Cardiff has been identified as the most concerning area in terms of crime rates, with an alarming 32.5 crimes per 100 people. Over the past 12 months, a total of 6,495 crimes were recorded in this region, with 31% of these offences classified as violent or sexual assaults. The area also ranks second-highest in shoplifting cases, with 1,562 reported incidents, as well as 416 cases of bicycle theft.
Following closely is Sunderland, with the Millfield Ward being a hotspot for crime, registering 24.9 crimes per 100 people. The prevalent offences in this area include violent and sexual assaults, anti-social behaviour, and shoplifting.
In Central Wolverhampton, encompassing St. Peters’ boundary, the crime rate stands at 23.3 crimes per 100 people, with a notable focus on drug-related offences based on police data.
North Middlesbrough leads in robbery rates, with 225 offences, and weapon possession with 130 offences in the last year, amounting to 23.1 crimes per 100 people. Other cities such as Durham, Newcastle upon Tyne, Stoke on Trent, York, Ipswich, and Bangor also feature in the rankings for high crime rates per 100 residents.
