The Albany County Executive, Daniel P. McCoy, along with the Albany County Legislature, have recently announced the allocation of $2,347,570 in Opioid Settlement Funded Community Grants to 14 organisations dedicated to preventing, treating, and supporting individuals affected by opioid use disorder in the Albany County area.

These funds will be utilised to implement new initiatives and expand existing programmes that have been identified as crucial in facilitating long-term community recovery efforts aimed at breaking the cycle of addiction. The projects selected include training and support for Certified Recovery Peer Advocates and Harm Reduction Educators, implementing policies to reduce opioid use for pain management in hospitals, enhancing information at pharmacies regarding opioid risks and treatment options, as well as research into the barriers faced by individuals seeking addiction recovery.

County Executive’s Commitment

County Executive McCoy emphasised the severity of the opioid epidemic, acknowledging it as one of the most pressing public health crises of our time. He expressed pride in Albany County’s proactive approach in holding opioid manufacturers and distributors accountable for the harm caused by these addictive substances.

McCoy stated, “While no amount of money can undo the damage already done, these funds empower local organisations to continue their essential work in addressing the root causes of opioid addiction and providing support to those in recovery. We are steadfast in our commitment to combatting the opioid crisis and ensuring that those affected receive the necessary help and resources.”

Legislature’s Support

Albany County Legislature Chairwoman, Joanne Cunningham, highlighted the importance of investing in prevention and recovery programmes that offer vital support to the community. She stated, “The Opioid Settlement Funds are crucial for providing treatment and supportive services that can help us combat this epidemic. This grant programme sends a clear message that the Legislature, County Executive’s office, and county departments are dedicated to supporting community members, especially during challenging times.”

Deputy Chairwoman of the Albany County Legislature, Wanda Willingham, expressed concern over the impact of the opioid epidemic on local communities, particularly in districts such as North Albany and West Hill. Willingham stressed the urgent need for innovative solutions to save lives and address the disparities in treatment rates among minority communities.

Community Collaboration

Majority Leader, Dennis Feeney, highlighted the importance of investing in comprehensive programmes to address the complex social challenge posed by the opioid epidemic. He commended the recipient organisations for their relentless efforts in battling the crisis and emphasised the need for a sustained response to build a healthier and more resilient community.

Dr. Stephen Giordano, Albany County Mental Health Commissioner, echoed the sentiment of community collaboration in addressing the opioid epidemic.
