A man has been sent to prison after persistently reoffending despite being previously ordered to undergo probation and reformative training back in 2019 for various crimes, including those involving minors.

The prosecution revealed that Marcus Lim Jia Long, a repeat offender, had recently committed offences against five underage boys whom he had exploited.

Alongside these crimes, he also engaged in a range of other illegal activities, such as driving without a valid licence and encouraging a 19-year-old male friend to carry out a reckless act.

On May 21, 24-year-old Lim was handed a sentence of 13 months and 10 weeks in jail, as well as a fine of $1,200. Additionally, he was banned from holding or obtaining any class of driving licences for a period of 30 months following his release.

Lim pleaded guilty to 13 charges, including multiple offences under the Children and Young Persons Act. Seventeen other charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Stacey Anne Fernandez disclosed that Lim had initially received a probation sentence of two years and three months on February 1, 2019, for offences related to the exploitation of young individuals.

Not long after, on July 4, 2019, while still serving his probation, Lim connected with a 14-year-old boy, identified as A1, through the dating app Grindr. He proceeded to engage in indecent conversations with the minor and requested explicit images.

During the same period, Lim committed a similar offence involving another 14-year-old boy, identified as A2, whom he also met on Grindr. Despite knowing their ages, Lim did not meet the boys in person.

Lim’s cousin later discovered inappropriate messages exchanged between Lim and the minors, leading to the involvement of the police on July 17, 2019, which resulted in the revocation of his probation and a mandate for him to undergo reformative training starting from September 4, 2019.

Despite undergoing the training, Lim continued his criminal behaviour and in October 2022, he befriended a 15-year-old boy through mutual acquaintances. The situation escalated in November 2022 when the minor, identified as A3, started residing at Lim’s residence. However, on December 5, 2022, Lim committed an indecent act on A3, prompting police intervention.

Subsequently, in April 2023, Lim established contact with another 15-year-old boy, referred to as A4, through a common friend. A4 later disclosed to his mother about his interactions with Lim, leading to the discovery of condoms in the boy’s possession.

In a separate incident, Lim, along with a group of friends, including a 19-year-old youth, engaged in irresponsible behaviour at the Marina Bay Sands hotel in January 2022, where he instigated the youth to throw water bottles from a balcony for money.

Furthermore, Lim was found guilty of driving without a valid licence on multiple occasions between May 2022 and May 2023, driving at various locations including Holland Road and Marina Coastal Expressway.

Lim’s repeated offences and failure to reform have resulted in a significant jail sentence, highlighting the importance of addressing recidivism and protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation and harm.
