Shocking body-cam footage from the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office and a video captured by K105 depict a harrowing incident involving a near-fatal vehicle fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

As reported by K105 on Wednesday morning, Grayson County Deputies Thomas Lane and Sean Fentress, Leitchfield Police Department Sgt. DJ Newton and Officers Brian Jennings and Tamara Jupin, alongside the Leitchfield Fire Department and EMS, swiftly responded to a crash and vehicle fire at the junction of Shrewsbury Road and Schoolhouse Road just after midnight on Wednesday.

Initial reports from Grayson County Dispatch indicated that a vehicle had crashed at the intersection. However, as emergency responders made their way to the scene, dispatch relayed that the vehicle, a Lincoln MKX, had ignited in flames with the male driver still trapped inside.

Lane was the first to arrive at the scene, finding the Lincoln fully engulfed in flames. He, along with a brave citizen identified as John Newton of Leitchfield, approached the burning vehicle and successfully extracted the driver, Mason Whobrey, from the car. Whobrey, who was conscious but appeared disoriented, would likely have perished if he had remained inside the vehicle.

“Dpty. Lane displayed exceptional bravery and acted swiftly upon reaching the scene,” praised Sheriff Norman Chaffins. “The video footage suggests that the driver hesitated to exit the burning car despite the urging of the citizens. Time is of the essence in such situations, and Dpty. Lane’s prompt response undoubtedly saved a life. We are fortunate to have Thomas serving the community where he grew up!”

The crash occurred when Whobrey drove his vehicle directly into a ditch on Shrewsbury Road from Schoolhouse Road, causing extensive damage to the front of the Lincoln. According to a witness, Whobrey may have failed to stop at the intersection and accelerated into the ditch.

Subsequently, Whobrey underwent a field sobriety test, leading to his arrest and charge for DUI.

Following the incident, Whobrey was taken to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center before being detained at the Grayson County Detention Center.
